Low season in the south of Portugal isn’t a compromise, it’s an “Indian summer” in the best sense: still warm enough to remote work from a terrace or swim after 6pm, but with the tourist crowds gone and the region’s own festivals taking over the calendar. If you’re doing remote work from the south of Portugal this autumn, this is genuinely one of the best stretches of the year to be here. Here’s what’s actually happening around POMAR this September and October straight from the neighbourhoods, not a tourist board list.
Festival F
Date : Faro, 3 to 5 September
Faro’s old town turns into a nine-stage open-air music festival for the last big party of summer. Now in its 11th year, Festival F fills the streets, courtyards and squares of Vila Adentro (right by the cathedral and castle) with Portuguese-language music spanning pop, hip hop, fado-inflected songwriting and dance, alongside an author market, exhibitions and street food. Gates open in the evening and it runs into the small hours.
If you’re staying with us in early September, this is the one not to miss it’s a 15 to 20 minute drive or bus ride from POMAR straight into the historic centre. We had so much fun last year.

Feira da Dieta Mediterrânica
Date : Tavira, 3 to 6 September
For four days, Tavira becomes the meeting point of Mediterranean food culture: around 200 exhibitors, local restaurants serving Mediterranean menus, traditional music (fado, cante alentejano), and this year a headline line-up including Carolina Deslandes and Diogo Piçarra. It’s free entry and spread across the historic centre, with a food and wellness angle that fits well if you’re into slow food and local producers.

Noites no Cais
Date : Lagos, 4 to 6 September
Lagos closes out the summer with three nights of open-air performances at Jardim da Constituição, right on the Cais das Descobertas. It’s a smaller, low-key line-up good for an evening stroll through the marina if you’re staying west of Faro.

Open House at Morgado do Quintão
Date : 26 september
Ten years, ten harvests, one celebration. Morgado do Quintão (a wine estate near Silves, about 25 minutes from POMAR) throws open its gates for its annual Harvest Party, this year a special edition marking a decade since their first release. Expect live music from morning until late, wine tastings, workshops, local producers and artisans, and plenty of shaded corners under the trees to spend the day at your own pace.

FestIlha
Date : Ilha da Armona, late September (dates TBC)
A proper local secret: once a year, the sandy island of Armona (a short 15 min ferry ride from Olhão) throws a one-day community festival with live music and traditional food — think grilled pork, cockles and oysters straight off the boat. It’s organised by locals for locals, small-scale and genuinely charming rather than touristy. Past editions have landed on the last Saturday of September, though 2026 dates weren’t out yet at time of writing — worth checking closer to the date if a beach-island day trip appeals.

Sagres Birdwatching & Nature Festival
Date : — 2 to 5 October
Every autumn, thousands of migratory birds funnel through Cape St. Vincent on their way to Africa, and Sagres turns into the birdwatching capital of Portugal for four days. Now in its 17th edition, the festival (organised by the Vila do Bispo municipality with SPEA-BirdLife and Almargem) runs guided walks, boat trips, photography workshops and talks this year’s featured species is the razorbill.
Even if birdwatching isn’t usually your thing, the early-morning walks along the cliffs are a genuinely beautiful way to see the Costa Vicentina. Worth the drive west if you’re staying with us and want a day trip.
Fértil Festival
Date : Olhão, 3-4 October
Fértil has become one of the most-loved grassroots events in the eastern Algarve: two days of live music, sustainability workshops, vegetarian and vegan food trucks, and the Artists & Fleas market, all set in the Chalé João Lúcio inside the Ria Formosa Natural Park.
It’s free, low-key, and about a 5-minute drive from POMAR a good one for colivers who want a slower, community-driven alternative to a big festival.

Feira de Santa Iria
Date : Faro, 17th to the 27th of October,
One of Faro’s oldest and biggest traditional fairs, Feira de Santa Iria takes over Largo de São Francisco for over a week with fairground rides, live music, folk performances and a proper antiques and bric-a-brac market. Recent editions have run from roughly the third week of October through to the following weekend a great excuse for an evening stroll into the old town if you’re staying at Na Praia or at The Base

Artists & Fleas — touring market, Faro/Olhão/Tavira
This itinerant creative market handmade goods, vintage clothing, local art, live music pops up across the Algarve throughout the year, often tied into bigger events like Fértil. September and October dates weren’t published yet at the time of writing, but it’s worth checking their calendar if you’re around Faro or Olhão and want a lazy Saturday market morning.
